It has been some time since Canada and its updated travel advisory are making the headlines. In between political tensions between India and Canada, the Canadian government issued a travel advisory. Some statements and points on the security situation mentioned in it are becoming the talk of the town. Why is everyone talking about it? What does it mention?

Recently, the Canadian government updated its travel advisory and added revised statements. In the revised advisory, the government has asked its residents and citizens to “exercise a high degree of caution” in India. It asked everyone to exercise a high degree of caution in India because of the threat of terrorist attacks throughout the country. In fact, the government mentioned regional risks in certain parts of India.

The travel advisory stated about avoiding all travel to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir due to the unpredictable security situation. “There is a threat of terrorism, militancy, civil unrest, and kidnapping”, it added further. Here’s what the advisory said about Jammu & Kashmir:

  • The security situation in the Union Territory of J&K is tense and there are high chances of violent protests, civil unrest, and acts of terrorism and militancy.
  • Clashes between militants and security forces take place regularly.
  • Terrorist attacks against security forces often lead to casualties of civilians.
  • Also, these attacks can occur at any moment.
  • Concerned authorities may conduct curfews and restrictions on short notice.
  • Canadian citizens are asked to carry ID.
  • The travel advisory mentioned to avoid any gatherings and demonstrations.
  • In fact, the Canadian government said that people may expect a heightened security presence and security checks.
  • They are asked to follow the instructions of local authorities.

The revised advisory excluded travelling plans to or within the Union Territory of Ladakh.

Revised Advisory For Other Places:

The Canadian government asked its citizens to avoid non-essential travel to Assam and Manipur “due to the risk of terrorism and insurgency”. The travel advisory mentioned avoiding all travel to places within 10 km of the border with Pakistan in some states due to the unpredictable security situation and the presence of landmines and unexploded ordnance. The states are Gujarat, Punjab, and Rajasthan. It excluded the Wagah Border crossing.
