The first few years after India gained independence under British rule were some of the most formative years for the country. We didn’t just overcome the tortured way of living but also took charge of our own development. One crucial aspect of this development of the “first state of India”. It typically refers to the state of Andhra Pradesh, which was formed on October 1, 1953, following the States Reorganisation Act of 1956. This act was a significant milestone in the restructuring of India’s states on linguistic lines, aiming to create states based on the languages spoken by the majority of the population within each region.

Andhra Pradesh played a pivotal role in this reorganisation process, making it often referred to as the “first state” in this context. Prior to its formation, it was part of the Madras Presidency under British rule. The people of the Andhra region, primarily speaking the Telugu language, had been advocating for a separate statehood based on linguistic lines.

Their efforts gained momentum in the early 1950s as part of the broader linguistic reorganisation movement in India. Finally, on October 1, 1953, the State of Andhra Pradesh was carved out of the Madras Presidency to meet the linguistic aspirations of the Telugu-speaking population. Kurnool was initially assigned as the capital of the newly formed state.

The demand for a separate Andhra Pradesh state was driven by the desire to promote the Telugu language and culture. The movement gained considerable traction under the leadership of prominent leaders like Potti Sreeramulu. His sacrifice drew widespread attention and pressure on the government to address linguistic concerns.

While Andhra Pradesh was formed in 1953, it included the Telugu-speaking areas of the erstwhile Madras Presidency. However, the Telugu-speaking areas of the princely state of Hyderabad remained outside Andhra Pradesh’s jurisdiction. This led to further demands for the integration of all Telugu-speaking areas. It resulted in the formation of the larger Andhra Pradesh on November 1, 1956. The formation of Andhra Pradesh marked a significant moment in India’s linguistic reorganisation process. It set a precedent for the creation of states based on linguistic identity. It eventually led to the establishment of various other states in India.

Andhra Pradesh’s formation in 1953 and subsequent expansion in 1956 were pivotal in the larger movement to create states based on linguistic affinity.
