The first step starts before you push your bags through the check-in. Always click a picture of your luggage and its initial condition. So in case you notice any wear & tear post-arrival, you can show proof to claim the damage.

The optimum time to report bag damage is before you actually take it out of the airport. Do not wait until you have arrived at your destination to file a complaint. You can file a claim at the airline’s baggage claim office, which is frequently close to the luggage carousel.

So next time you travel make sure to click before pictures for a claim and pray to be lucky enough to not get your bags damaged.
