Bagdogra Airport’s New Terminal Designs Are Inspired By Himalayan Foothills & Bengal’s Heritage

Earlier this year, the Airport Authority of India (AAI) announced expansion plans for Bagdogra Airport in West Bengal. A new terminal will be built at the airport and the construction is set for completion by March 2027. The first look of the new terminal is now out and it shows textures, tones, and tranquillity of Bengal’s landscape and culture blended with Himalayan serenity.

First Look Of Bagdogra Airport’s New Terminal

Architectural firm CP Kukreja Architects is spearheading the design of Bagdogra Airport’s new terminal. They recently took to their Instagram to share the first look of the airport’s new terminal. Blending the nature and culture of the region, the interiors of the airport reflect a dialogue between nature and movement.

According to the architectural firm, the design of the new terminal is a play of regional identity with resilient innovation. The new structure will be more than infrastructure, it will showcase “a dialogue between nature, culture, and climate-conscious design.”

The terminal’s facade will have vertical aluminium fins and pitched roofs that have been inspired by the Himalayan foothills and Bengal’s architectural heritage. It will serve as a vital gateway to Darjeeling, Gangtok, and Kalimpong, and once complete, it will be equipped to handle 1,000 passengers per hour!

The Instagram post also shared how the team plans to rise above the challenges of Bagdogra Airport’s flood-prone terrain. They mentioned that they will use robust mitigation strategies like culverts, retaining walls, and integrated drainage channels to ensure no troubles in the future.

Sustainable & Climate-Resilient Design

Bagdogra Airport’s new terminal is being designed with sustainability at its core. Inspired by nature, the team is targeting a net-zero facility with passive design, low-E glass, and renewable energy to significantly reduce its environmental impact. They want to demonstrate how regional context and sustainability can shape the future of Indian infrastructure. CP Kukreja Architects is calling it a climate-resilient landmark rooted in place and purpose and we’re rooting their intent!
