Over the last few years, Bali has emerged as one of the most loved beach destinations by travel lovers. Now, the tropical paradise is likely to get more expensive as the officials have proposed a new tourism tax to control the overcrowding in Bali. Scroll on to know more about this new proposal.
New Tourism Tax Proposed In Bali To Tackle Overtourism
According to Travel And Tour World, beach holidays in Bali may get pricer, thanks to the proposed new tourism tax. Balinese officials are considering a daily fee for international visitors, on the lines of Bhutan’s Sustainable Development Fee. The proposal suggests levying a daily tourist tax of $100 (₹8,737) on international visitors.
Officials believe this new tourism tax will help limit visitor numbers and encourage more responsible tourism in Bali. They are following models used by other destinations that regulate tourism to protect cultural and environmental assets like Bhutan and Nepal. Wayan Puspa Negara, head of the Bali Marginal Tourism Actors Alliance, told the South China Morning Post that the region hopes to “select tourists from a spending perspective” and limit entry in Bali.
Can This Move Help Control The Tourist Influx?
The proposal to levy a tourism tax comes amid concerns of overcrowding and ill-behaved tourists in Bali. The beach destination is known for its scenic beaches, mouth-watering grub, culture, and affordable accommodation, thus attracting tourists of all kinds. While a major portion of Bali’s economy depends on tourism, overtourism has become a cause of concern.
Back in 2023, Bali considered banning motorbike rentals for tourists to reduce traffic accidents. Also, in 2024, local officials shut down the construction of new hotels, villas, and nightclubs in many parts of the island. The Bali Tourism Board, in fact, ran a campaign urging travellers to behave and be respectful of the culture of the island. The new tourism tax is their latest initiative to overcome the overcrowding issue in Bali.
