Experts have frequently pointed out India’s low testing rate for novel coronavirus. They have credited low testing rates to be the reason for low coronavirus cases in a country of 1.3 billion. With just 18 tests per million of the population in India, this has been a cause of worry for experts around the globe. But here where there’s light at the end of the tunnel, Bangalore will soon have 31 fever clinics that will screen people who might have symptoms of coronavirus this will assist the government to spot cases well in advance and take necessary action.

Dr K Sudhakar, Medical Education Minister in charge of the coronavirus war room and crisis management in Bangalore stated that the government will set up 31 Fever Clinics in the city to test people who think they might have COVID-19 symptoms. The government is looking forward to conducting 2500 tests in the next few weeks in order to get a better understanding of the situation. He further added that in the last few weeks many people have arrived in the Garden City from many countries. So everyone around these people who might be termed as primary or secondary patients can go and get themselves tested in these Fever Clinics. These will be opened from Friday, 27th March 2020.
According to the minister, Karnataka is the first state in India to take up such precautionary measures of setting up Fever Clinics. ‘Trace, Test and Treat’ will be the approach of the state to deal with this deadly virus. Details of 1,25,000 people who have come back from abroad and are under quarantine have been procured. Out of these people around 1500 of them have been tested. The minister mentioned that 25,000 people will be tested for coronavirus in the next 10 days.

Fever Clinics in Bangalore will be conducting around 25,000 tests over the next 10 days, And even though this number might seem a bit too ambitious considering the number of tests conducted so far, the government has roped in more laboratories and procured reagents to conduct these tests. Sudhakar emphasized that there has been a significant increase in the number of cases in the last 3 days, so the government of Karnataka is focussing the need for more tests, including random tests. Meanwhile, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa directed offices to strictly follow the guidelines and take measures required to ensure people remain quarantined in their homes, during a video conference with other officials of the state. He directed officials to restrict people from unnecessarily roaming around the streets and said they they should be persuaded to buy essential commodities from vendors in their won localities. Deputy Commissioners were instructed to make sure pesticides and fertilizers are available for farmers. The function of private clinics will be assured across the state. Banks and Microfinance institutions will be instructed to defer loan recoveries as people will face issues due to the impact of the coronavirus lockdown.
