As we relish piping hot chole bhature in Sarojini Nagar, Gurleen delves into her college days and academic life, where she paints a vivid picture of the scene—boys loitering outside girls’ colleges, blasting music from their Thars, flashing parking lights as a bizarre courtship signal. “They’d just stand there, staring,” she recalls, joking about how their so-called approach lacked any actual conversation.

Gurleen also shares her academic journey, revealing that she studied Microbial and Food Technology—a course that sounds impressive but, as she humorously puts it, turned out to be quite different from what she expected. “Until my second year, I thought this was actual technology. Then, in my third-year research project, I made pickles. That’s when I realised—so this is what it is?!”

Gurleen further describes herself as a disciplined student, though her backbenchers’ friend circle meant she got “the best of both worlds.” Despite being decent at studies, she confesses to helping her less academically inclined friends cheat and occasionally bunking classes with them. This mix of sincerity and mischief shines through as she recounts these stories, making it clear why she’s a fan favourite in the stand-up scene.

Reflecting on her college days, Gurleen admits her focus was less on academics and more on theatre, often finding herself surrounded by the backbenchers who relied on her for academic support. Her path into comedy wasn’t a deliberate one but rather a serendipitous discovery sparked by watching stand-up videos online.

“It wasn’t really a planned journey—just something that happened very fast,” she laughs, recalling her first open mic in Chandigarh, which surprisingly went well and encouraged her to pursue comedy further.

Despite her family’s strong involvement in sports, Gurleen’s early life was a blend of competitiveness and creativity, with her athleticism spanning from cricket to handball. Her first foray into comedy led to increased confidence and a recurring presence at open mics, marking the beginning of her stand-up career.
