Travelling in trains can be super fun but if you’ve travelled by train a lot, then you know that the food is not the greatest. Many people have shared that they were served food by the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation or the IRCTC that was poorly made or that had bugs, lizards and even rats in it. While this Redditor didn’t have to face such an extreme situation, they shared that the food they were served on the Bengaluru-Goa train did not come with proper utensils.

A passenger who was travelling on the Bengaluru-Goa Train recently had a subpar experience with the food served on the train. While this may not be a novel occurrence, it is nevertheless disheartening to see. In the post shared on Reddit, the passenger said that they ordered anda curry and four rotis for dinner. It cost them around ₹90.

When the food arrived, they were surprised to see that they were merely handed a foil bag along with a couple of flimsy paper plates. They weren’t given a sturdy tray or a bowl to pour the curry in. Trains are usually very bumpy and it is easy to spill an item like curry. Furthermore, food provided by IRCTC is always served with a sturdy tray so people have a supportive surface off of which they can eat their food.

However, these basic things were missing when this person’s food was delivered. The person therefore took to Reddit to vent their frustration. They said that it had been a while since they travelled by train but were surprised to see how low the standards of service provided by the IRCTC had dropped these days.

Many people responded by saying that it didn’t seem like the food was served by the IRCTC. This is because the food is generally served with a tray inside disposable containers along with other accompaniments like curd, pickles and more. However, the user confirmed that he, in fact, got it from IRCTC. Some users then went on to explain why that might have happened.

The IRCTC does not cater food in all trains. In many trains, it gives contracts to private vendors. The food might be from one of those private vendors and hence, it came without a tray or any other accompaniments that it usually comes with.

The user, however, responded by saying that even though the vendor may be private, if they’re given a contract, the IRCTC should ensure that they maintain certain standards.
