India’s Silicon Valley, Bengaluru has now overtaken Delhi to become the city with the highest number of private vehicles plying on roads. With 23 lakh private cars in the city, this title comes with its own set of consequences. Traffic for one and air pollution for another.
Bengaluru Has 38 Lakh Private Vehicles, Highest In India
According to a report by The Times Of India, Bengaluru which suffers from severe traffic congestion has its large number of private vehicles to blame. As of March 31, 2023, Delhi recorded a total of 71.5 lakh vehicles which includes 20.7 private vehicles. Whereas Bengaluru has 23.1 lakh private vehicles which surpasses the national capital by a large variable.
For long Delhi has always remained at the top as its residents own the most private vehicles in India. But after the Delhi Transport Department’s order, directing the scrapping and registering of them, the number of private vehicles in the capital has gone down drastically.

Delhi Took Steps To Scrap & Deregister Overaged Vehicles
As per the Delhi Statistical Handbook 2023, a total of 1.2 crore vehicles were registered in Delhi. This includes 33.8 lakh private vehicles. However, in the last couple of years, the transport department scrapped many vehicles that weren’t in proper condition and also registered overaged vehicles. The Supreme Court also banned diesel and petrol vehicles older than 10 to 15 years.
When it comes to Bengaluru, Karnataka’s Deputy CM DK Shivakumar stated that the high number of vehicles was one of the main reasons for damages on roads. He stated that on average 2000 new vehicles are registered in the city. So, with so many vehicles plying on roads, it’s obvious that they will deteriorate the condition of the roads. And fixing these roads with white topping will give it endurance for 30 to 4o years.
