Bengaluru To Build A New Rail Hub Near Devanahalli To Improve Connectivity And Ease Congestion

Bengaluru’s railway infrastructure is soon getting an upgrade. The Railway Board has approved a thorough survey for the construction of a new terminal near Devanahalli. Once completed, it will become the city’s 4th significant rail hub. Because of the growing pressure on existing railway stations in Bengaluru, they are struggling to cater to the existing massive passenger traffic. This new terminal will help improve Bengaluru’s railway future.

Bengaluru To Get A New Railway Terminal

The Indian Railway Board recently sanctioned a survey to check the feasibility of building a new railway terminal near Devanahalli. This new terminal will be located 35 km away from the city centre and close to Kempegowda International Airport. Featuring maintenance facilities that will help balance the load of traffic across Bengaluru’s rail network, the survey of this mega-hub will cost ₹1.3 crores.

The focus of this survey is to find a suitable location around the existing Devanahalli station or along the Yelahanka-Devanahalli-Chikkaballapur corridor. Home to over 11.5 million people, Bengaluru operates with only three major railway stations, namely Yashwantpur, KSR Bengaluru, and Sir M. Visveswaraiya Terminal (SMVT) in Baiyappannahalli. Naturally, these stations are operating at full capacity, hardly meeting the growing demand for rail travel.

According to the Hindustan Times report, Bengaluru currently handles 140 originating trains, 142 trains passing through daily and 139 terminating trains. Adding to the pressure, 100 trains undergo primary maintenance every day. To ease the congestion at the existing railway stations, the new Devanahalli terminal is crucial. This fourth major hub will distribute the rail traffic and will also improve the efficiency of the railway network.

According to the Hindustan Times report, this new terminal will also help with overcrowding on platforms and will prevent delays. It will ultimately offer a more comfortable experience for all passengers, with smooth and faster trains. Devanahalli has been chosen strategically for this new terminal. Since it is located on the outskirts of the city, there will be ample space for expansion.

Its location to Kempegowda International Airport also makes it ideal for those travelling from the airport. The survey is the first step in this multiphase project to build a new railway terminal. After the feasibility study, a detailed plan will be created, followed by the construction. The timeline for completion of this terminal hasn’t been set.

This new terminal comes as a game-changing development in Bengaluru that will improve the travel experience for millions.
