Is Bengaluru Getting A Second International Airport? Here’s What We Know

Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport is considered one of the best airports in India. But it might soon have competition. Bengaluru is set to get a second international airport soon. The Centre has now given Karnataka approval to go ahead with this much-awaited project. Apparently, the location will also be finalised soon. Here’s what we know so far.

Second International Airport Coming Soon In Bengaluru

A second airport in Bengaluru has been in talks for a long time. Now, the project might become a reality. For years, the city has been witnessing an increase in passenger traffic. This pushed the government to think about expanding its aviation capacity. According to News18, a meeting was recently held in Delhi where the Centre asked Karnataka to go ahead and independently finalise the location for Bengaluru’s second international airport.

But before that, a feasibility report from the state will be required. After that, the Centre will grant all required permissions. Reportedly, authorities are considering three sites for this airport. These include Chudahalli and Somanahalli along Kanakapura Road in south Bengaluru, and a third location near Kunigal Road in Nelamangala on the city’s western outskirts. Authorities are evaluating these locations for parameters like land availability, soil stability, connectivity, environmental impact, and overall project cost.

Second Airport Is Now A Necessity

According to News18, Bengaluru’s existing airport, Kempegowda International Airport, is located in Devanahalli, nearly 40 km from the city centre. Many people have often complained about it being far, especially those living in the south and west of Bengaluru.

The sites being considered, particularly along Kanakapura Road, are seen as more accessible for many. Reportedly, the detailed feasibility report is in its final stages, and bids are being invited. The study will examine long-term passenger demand, financial viability, and infrastructure requirements before a final site is selected.

It should also be noted that daily flight movements and passenger volumes are expected to grow steadily in the coming years. To meet this demand, a second airport in Bengaluru is now seen as a necessity.
