Why Is Bengaluru Planning To Introduce American Right-Side Driving Style On THESE Roads?

Bengaluru is not just known for its IT hubs, nightlife and food, but also for one more thing: its traffic. But now, the Bengaluru police are apparently planning to shift from left-side driving to American-style right-side driving on a few city roads that see heavy congestion on most days. Keep reading to know how the authorities are planning to implement this change.

Bengaluru May Adopt US-Style Driving Style To Ease Traffic

India follows the system of driving on the left side of the road, while the United States drives on the right side. According to a report by The Times of India, Bengaluru may soon adopt the US-style driving system on some of its roads. The city is notorious for heavy traffic and congested roads. Implementing this change is a new plan to address the issue.

Highly congested junctions like Goraguntepalya Junction on the Bengaluru-Tumakuru Road could be among the first to see vehicles moving on the right side of the road. Reportedly, Bengaluru police hope that this plan will help reduce congestion and bottlenecks, particularly during peak hours.

MA  Saleem, Director General and Inspector General of Police, shared with The Times of India that the police will soon apply the plan between CMT Junction (past Jalahalli Circle), Outer Ring Road and Nayandahalli Junction on Mysuru Road. On these roads, vehicles entering Bengaluru from the direction of Tumakuru can use right-side driving on the lane that moves without disturbance.

Only 47% Of Commuters Use Public Transport In The City

According to the report by The Times of India, the practice of right-side driving to control traffic is already in place opposite Garuda Mall. The plan has reportedly been successful there. Bengaluru police are also working with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to control congestion on national highways connecting the city.

Though the authorities are trying their best to manage traffic in Bengaluru, the most effective solution still remains the use of public transport. Currently, only 47% of commuters use public transport, while many others rely on private vehicles. This could be one of the main factors causing heavy traffic in the city.
