PM Modi addressed a rally in Bihar on Monday, where he inaugurated several major projects worth ₹36,000 crore. Apart from unveiling a newly developed airport terminal in Bihar, the highlight of his visit was the launch of the National Makhana Board. Makhana, or foxnuts, is regarded as a superfood. It aids digestion, helps manage cholesterol, keeps bones strong, and has many other benefits. It is also a low-calorie food with a low glycaemic index, making it popular among health-conscious people.
Bihar accounts for nearly 90% of India’s makhana production. PM Modi also took to his X account and wrote, “Makhanas have had a very deep connection with Bihar. The National Makhanas Board will also be launched from Purnea, which will bring great benefits to our farmer brothers and sisters in this region.” The official account of the BJP also shared this update on social media.
But what exactly is the National Makhana Board? According to a report by India TV, it is a government body first announced in the Union Budget 2025-26 by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The Board has been set up with an initial allocation of ₹100 crore to boost the makhana industry in India.

The Project Aims To Boost The Superfood Industry
As per the same report, the National Makhana Board will help improve processing methods and create new products from foxnuts to increase their market value. The Board also plans to promote makhana in both domestic and international markets, as more and more people are now leaning towards this superfood.
It will provide farmers with training, financial assistance, and access to government schemes. The Board will also work on technology development, value addition, better post-harvest management, brand development, and export promotion. This initiative is expected to benefit not only farmers in Bihar but also the country’s makhana industry as a whole.
You would also like to know that districts like Madhubani, Darbhanga, Sitamarhi, Saharsa, Katihar, Purnea, Supaul, Kishanganj, and Araria are primary hubs for makhana production in Bihar. Their favourable climate and fertile soil make them ideal for producing high-quality makhana.
