One of the city’s oldest markets, the Dadar Market is thronged by thousands of retailers and buyers. At markets like these where crowds gather in large numbers, it becomes difficult to practice social distancing. Therefore as a precautionary measure, the BMC has come up with a new plan to disperse the usual gathering at the market.
Dadar Market Shifts To Four Different Locations In The City
Following a meeting with the APMC market authority and the police on Friday, the civic body has decided to partially close the Dadar market and shift it to four different locations in the city. These include Somaiya ground, MMRDA exhibition ground, Mulund Octroi Naka and Dahisar Octroi Naka.
The vegetables coming from Pune and Nasik will be directed to the Somaiya and MMRDA grounds. The retail vegetable vendors residing between Ghatkopar and Matunga will have to go to Somaiya ground, and those residing between Bandra and Goregaon will have to go to the MMRDA ground to buy vegetables. Similarly, vendors residing between Mulund and Ghatkopar will have to go to the Mulund Octroi Naka to buy vegetables.
Meanwhile, the vegetables coming from Vasai and Virar will be supplied to retail vendors coming from Dahisar to Malad at the Dahisar Octroi Naka. The retail vendors from Mumbai itself will be allowed to sell the vegetables at the original spot in Senapati Bapat Marg in Dadar.

What’s More?
On average, about 75,000 retailers crowd the Dadar market every day to collect vegetables brought by 300 trucks. Given the volume of trade that takes place here, it was essential to decentralize the market to avoid convergence of retailers in one place.
Earlier, the BMC, under the supervision of policemen, had marked 200 pitches for vegetable vendors to maintain social distancing in the markets. However, with thousands of retail vegetable vendors visiting the market at the same time, the move failed considerably.
While the civic body is doing its bit to contain the spread of the virus, let’s do our bit by ensuring we follow all the rules of social distancing while stepping out to buy our groceries.
