Imagine stepping into a world where history, architecture, and nature converge in a breathtaking display of grandeur. The Forest Research Institute (FRI) in Dehradun is precisely that world—a colossal edifice that not only houses pioneering forestry research but also stands as a monumental testament to architectural brilliance. Picture a structure so vast and intricately designed that it once earned a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest purely brick building on the planet.

Dehradun’s Forest Research Institute, The World’s Largest Purely Brick Building

Established in 1906 as the Imperial Forest Research Institute, FRI boasts an illustrious history and an awe-inspiring presence. The institution’s grand structure, styled in Greco-Roman and Colonial architectural forms by the eminent architect C.G. Blomfield, remains a testament to early 20th-century design ingenuity.

The FRI’s main building, inaugurated in 1929 by the then Viceroy Freeman Freeman-Thomas, 1st Marquess of Willingdon, is a stunning example of Greco-Roman and Colonial architecture. The building’s sheer scale is breathtaking; it spans a plinth area of 2.5 hectares, and the Guinness Book of Records once recognised it as the world’s largest purely brick structure.

Set against the backdrop of the outer Himalayas, the institute’s campus spans an impressive 450 hectares. This lush expanse of greenery complements the building’s architectural splendour. The FRI’s grounds are meticulously landscaped, offering a tranquil escape with rows of trees and extensive gardens.

The institute’s expansive infrastructure includes state-of-the-art laboratories, a well-stocked library, a comprehensive herbarium, an arboreta, a printing press, and experimental field areas. FRI also houses six specialised museums focusing on various aspects of forestry.

The campus features botanical gardens and picnic spots, ideal for leisurely strolls and relaxation. The serene environment, coupled with the institute’s picturesque landscapes, makes it a popular destination for photographers and nature enthusiasts.

The FRI campus has also served as a glamorous backdrop for several Bollywood films, including “Student of the Year,” “Paan Singh Tomar,” and “Dear Daddy,” among others. This cinematic allure adds to the institute’s cultural significance.
