Bus And Taxi Lanes To Expand In Dubai

The city of Dubai boasts a well-developed public transportation system. This makes it simple to get around. The travel provisions include Dubai metro and buses. Recently the Dubai Road and transport authority curated an initiative in the public interest. RTA approved a proposal to build 37 km of dedicated bus and taxi lanes between 2023 and 2027. This proposal will bring major changes to Dubai’s public transport infrastructure.

The Lanes Will Run Through Eight Major Roadways

The designated lanes will run through specific streets. They are namely Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street, Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah Street, 2nd December Street, Amman Street, Al Satwa Road, Al Nahda Street, Omar bin Al-Khattab Street, and Naif Street. This brings the total length of dedicated bus and taxi lanes to 48.6 kilometres. On congested streets like 2nd December Street, the designated lanes will cut bus travel time in half.

Goals Behind This Initiative

RTA’s plan to improve city living conditions is in accordance with Western mass transportation regulations. This will provoke people to use public transportation rather than private automobiles.
It will lower operational expenses, both direct and indirect, as well as pollutants. The project might result in a 30% increase in public transportation ridership on some streets by 2030. It may reduce the need for extra buses owing to the reduced travel time. The lanes will be prominently defined in red and enormous signage will state that they are solely for buses and taxis. The concept has been successfully tested on a number of congested roads and junctions. These include Khalid Bin Al Waleed Street, Naif Street, and Ghubaiba Street. The RTA also approved a five-year sustainability strategy that runs from 2021 to 2025 and includes 20 projects.
