The Aadhaar card is arguably the most important identification document for Indians. For those who may not know, it is an essential proof of age, identity and residence in India and it consists of a unique number with 12 digits. But it might be prudent to ask, do Non-Resident Indians or NRIs need one? Here are all of the important details that you would need to know about the answer to this important question.
Can NRIs Apply For An Aadhaar Card?
According to an article which was recently published by The Indian Express, it is not necessary for NRIs to have an Aadhaar Card, at least if they are residing outside of the country. However, if they are in the country, having an Aadhaar Card will aid them in a number of ways.
Especially in things like official government processes, opening a bank account, and even renting out properties. It is important to note that NRIs can apply through Form 1 for adults and Forms 3 to 6 for children. For foreign nationals above 18, there is form 7.

How To Apply For It? A Step-By-Step Guide To The Process
Step 1: Head to the Unique Identification Authority of India or UIDAI portal.
Step 2: Select ‘Book An Appointment.’
Step 3: Choose Your Location.
Step 4: Select ‘Non-Resident Indian’ and fill in your contact details.
Step 5: On the day of the appointment, bring all the necessary documents and their photocopies. They include ID proofs PAN card, Voter card, Indian passport, Utility bill, Birth Certificate, and documents proving non-residence in India.
Step 6: In addition to these documents, the officials will also collect biometric information.
Step 7: After all these procedures are completed, your Aadhaar card will be dispatched to you in the next 90 days.
