Have you ever eaten something so fresh that it took you to the beach and tasted like the ocean? Well, that’s exactly what ceviche brings to the table! With absolutely no cooking required and minimal cooking time, this dish is light and refreshing. What is ceviche, though, and how has it evolved over time? How can you prepare ceviche at home? Read on to learn all about it!
Ceviche, A Fresh And Zesty Dish That Tastes Like The Ocean
Popular in Latin America, ceviche is a raw fish delicacy that is not cooked with heat but with citrus juice. No heat, no pan, no oil, just the magic of lime or lemon juice! Because of the acid in the juice, the fish gets firm and opaque, almost like it was cooked with heat. Add to that some onions, chilli peppers, and fresh herbs, and you’ve got a burst of flavours in every bite.
The unique flavour and preparation method of ceviche aren’t the only fascinating things about it. This dish goes back over 2,000 years to the coastal regions of Peru, where the ancient Moche civilisation prepared something similar with local fish and fermented juice. The ceviche recipe evolved into what it is today when Spanish explorers introduced citrus fruits like lemons and limes to South America.
Over time, it spread across Latin America, and every country added its own twist. In Mexico, they add tomatoes and serve them with crunchy tostadas. Adding to the texture of the dish, in Ecuador, it is served with popcorn or plantain chips. Even though every version has its own story and taste, the main idea behind the dish stays the same.
Modern Twists On Ceviche
Ceviche is not just about fish anymore. Chefs now experiment with different seafood, such as scallops or prawns. The experimentation is not just bound to seafood; vegetarian ceviche made with mushrooms or jackfruit is also a thing! People are not only playing with the main ingredient but also with the flavour, with elements like fresh fruit and coconut cream.
