Cappadocia in Turkey, known for its spectacular hot air balloon rides, historic caves, and fairy chimneys, has now set a new milestone. The iconic destination has recently gained Michelin recognition for its unique culinary heritage and rising gastronomic scene.
Cappadocia Earns A Place On The Michelin Map
Known worldwide for its famous hot air balloon rides drifting above the magical fairy chimneys, Cappadocia is an iconic destination in Turkey, popular among travellers. This historical region welcomed over 4.37 million visitors in 2024, reinforcing its position as a leading cultural destination.
Not only that, but its signature hot air balloon rides also reached a historic milestone. Believe it or not, 933,000 travellers took to the skies on these balloons, the highest number ever recorded. Amazing right? Imagine riding on those hot air balloons over those historical caves; the experience would be truly magical!
Now, Cappadocia will be known not just for its beauty, caves, and chimneys, but also for its gastronomic scene. It has made a place for itself on the Michelin map. Known for its rich culinary tradition rooted in Turkish and Anatolian heritage, its distinctive food has earned Michelin recognition.
The Region’s Rising Culinary Scene
Cappadocia offers a wide selection of delicious meat dishes you won’t find anywhere else. From Testi Kebab served in a clay pot and slowly cooked for hours to the famous Kayseri mantı (tiny dumplings), which are so small that 40 pieces fit on a single spoon. These dumplings are usually served with yoghurt and melted butter infused with traditional Turkish spices.
Other must-try dishes include Keskek (a slow-cooked wheat and meat soup), Tirit (bread soaked in meat broth), Zerdeli Pilav (fragrant rice dish), Koftur, pumpkin dessert, and much more. The options are endless, and Michelin recognition for the region is well-deserved.
Apart from its food, Cappadocia is also known for its local wines. The region has a long history of winemaking dating back to the first Christian monks who settled there. Some varieties include Emir, Kalecik Karası, and Öküzgözü. Honestly, this new Michelin recognition will likely boost the number of travellers visiting not only for the rides but also for its cuisine!
