On the 19th of July, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare issued a statement which said that it had dropped the requirement of randomly testing two per cent of the international population for Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction or RT-PCR.

Up until now, authorities could randomly test up to two per cent of international travellers arriving in the country for COVID-19 via RT-PCR. This requirement, as per the latest statement will no longer be applicable. Travellers are free to enter the country and it is preferred that they be fully vaccinated against the virus.

According to an article recently published by the LokMat Times, this latest rule will be taken into effect from the 20th of July. From tomorrow onwards, random RT-PCR-based testing of two per cent of the population will not be carried out.

Even though the ministry will continue to monitor the situation throughout the country, it has decided to ease the guidelines further. Furthermore, if any international traveller has exhibited COVID-19 symptoms, then they will be isolated and due procedure will follow in order to ensure that the spread is contained.

Even The Times Of India recently reported that Mumbai has had zero COVID-19 cases and deaths for two days in a row now.
