Do you know that vehicular transportation is banned on the Bandipur stretch of NH-766 and NH-67 at night? The restriction has been in action for several years now. About a month back, there were many rumours about opening the stretch for traffic but speculations were resolved later. Now, there is a proposal to develop a tunnel in Bandipur WIldife Sanctuary to resolve this issue of travelling at night.
Centre Recommended Building A 6-Lane Tunnel In Bandipur Wildlife Sanctuary
Recently, the central government has proposed a plan to construct a six-lane tunnel in Karnataka’s Bandipur Wildlife Sanctuary. The proposal aims to look into the problem of traffic ban here at night and come up with a definite solution. According to the project suggested by the centre, the plan is to develop the tunnel in the wildlife sanctuary’s forest area.
According to a report published by Mathrubhumi English, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways looked into preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for this project to construct a six-lane tunnel in Bandipur. Previously, there have been conversations on structuring an elevated road in the national park but the concerned departments rejected those plans.
Now, the central government is inclining towards developing a huge tunnel in Bandipur as the 6-lane project looks like a well-thought-of solution to combat the issue of the travel ban at night time, focus on not disturbing wildlife during the night hours, and also prevent causing any harm to the green forest area.

How Will This Project Help The Forest Area?
The Mathrubhumi English report also explained that the new tunnel in Bandipur can help commuters travel between Wayanad, Mysuru, and Bengaluru conveniently. Road journeys are likely to get easier and hassle-free. In addition to enhanced travel experiences, the new development’s primary focus will be to put an end to the ban on night travel here.
Nitin Gadkari announced the proposal during a recent meeting with John Brittas, a Member of the Rajya Sabha. He also shared necessary information about the project and its objectives.
