Chef Floyd Cardoz of Mumbai’s Famous Bombay Canteen Succumbs To Coronavirus

World-renowned chef and culinary director of Mumbai’s well-known Bombay Canteen, Floyd Cardoz, died on Wednesday in the United States after he succumbed to the deadly coronavirus. The 59-year-old celebrated chef was admitted to a hospital in New York on March 18 after he had tested positive for the virus.

Before Flying To New York, Chef Cardoz Was In Mumbai

Cardoz was recently in Mumbai for the fifth-anniversary celebrations of Bombay Canteen, which was held on March 1. After this, he returned to New York on March 8. Last week, he had also shared a photo of himself in the hospital on his Instagram, admitting that he was not feeling well.

Hunger Inc, the company that is behind the Bombay Canteen, O Pedro and Bombay Sweet Shop, had released a statement when the chef tested positive for the virus. It read: As a precautionary measure, we have informed the Health Department in Mumbai about the same. We are also reaching out personally to people who have interacted with him during his visit to India, so they can take necessary medical advice should they indicate any symptoms (fever, cough, shortness of breath) and/ or self-quarantine. Mr. Cardoz flew back to New York from Mumbai via Frankfurt on March 8, 2020.

Remembering Floyd Cardoz

Floyd Cardoz owns restaurants in New York and is the man behind Bombay Canteen and O Pedro in Mumbai. His third establishment, the Bombay Sweet Shop, had also launched earlier this month. Cardoz was recently featured in an episode of Netflix’s Ugly Delicious. He also won Top Chef Masters Season 3 in 2011, where he gave an inventive spin to our favorite upma. Cardoz has also been nominated for multiple James Beard awards and has 2 cookbooks to his credit, Flavourwalla and One Spice Two Spice.
