Recently, Chennai Metro Rail has informed the Tamil Nadu government and the Centre that the first phase II stretch from Poonamallee to Vadapalani is completed and can be inaugurated anytime now. Want to know more about it? Read on.
Chennai To Inaugurate Poonamallee-Vadapalani Metro
On Tuesday, Chennai Metro Rail got the approval for running the 14.6-km stretch, along with modifications granted with a view to the speed and frequency of train services. As per a report by The Hindu, the CMRL can now run trains with a frequency of 10 minutes on the Poonamallee – Vadapalani route.
As per the CMRL officials, the approval was important because the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) had provided only partial approval in February this year. The CRS had stated that from Poonamallee to Porur, train frequency should be limited to 15 minutes, and the Vadapalani station might be made accessible only after constructing 26 deck slabs in the double-decker corridor of lane 5.

No Speed Restriction Between Poonamallee-Vadapalani Route
The latest approval is granted after the fifth safety inspection. A team from the Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety (CCRS) went to the stations along this stretch and took a ride in the train as well on May 23 and 24. Post which, the approval was granted to CMRL on Tuesday. An official also told the portal that between Poonamallee and Porur, there are no speed restrictions. In the route from Porur to Vadapalani, the maximum speed has been modified from 25 kmph to 40 kmph. This means the trains will be available every 10 minutes within this distance. The average speed of trains in the stretch, as decided in the planning stage of the project, will be 32 kmph.
Earlier in February, the CRS highlighted several issues on the Poonamallee-Vadapalani stretch and made some blunt observations indicating its lack of satisfaction regarding some aspects. After complying with the observations, including the completion of the construction of 26 deck slabs and the examination of a composite girder by the Structural Engineering Research Centre (SERC), the CMRL had requested that the speed and frequency be increased.
