China: Travel Alert Issued After 7.1-Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Tibet; Mt Everest Tourism Put On Hold

On Tuesday morning, a strong earthquake of magnitude 7.1 on the Richter Scale hit the Nepal-Tibet border. The earthquake jolted the Shigatse high-altitude county of Dingri, which is located on the Chinese side of Mount Everest. China Issues Travel Alert After Massive Earthquake

After the massive earthquake on Tuesday morning, China shut down its side of Mt Everest, also known as Mount Qomolangma, for the tourists. The earthquake was felt in Dingri County of China, which is also the base camp of the world’s highest peak there. Keeping the safety of the tourists in mind, the Chinese authorities have closed tourism in the region. They have also tightened safety measures and are conducting necessary safety checks in the aftermath.

Dingri County is home to around 62,000 people. According to the local Chinese news agency, Xinhua, more than 1,000 houses were damaged due to the earthquake. According to Travel And Tour World, 53 casualties were reported in the region with at least 62 others injured. Disaster relief teams have been actively engaged in recovery and emergency efforts in the region.

The Qomolangma Station for Atmospheric and Environmental Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, which is located in Dingri, is currently experiencing a power outage. Fortunately, the facilities have remained in good condition.

126 Casualties Reported After The Earthquake

As per the latest report by The Indian Express, at least 126 people have been killed, and 188 others injured after the strong earthquakes hit the Nepal-Tibet border. As per the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake was reported around 6:35 AM on Tuesday.

Following that, a series of earthquakes hit the region and the tremors were felt in central Nepal, Kathmandu, India, and China. The first and the most powerful earthquake was reported 93 km northeast of Lobuche, near the Nepal-Tibet border. In India, shockwaves were reported in Delhi-NCR, Bihar, Assam, and West Bengal.
