The Hanging Temple, also called Xuankong Si, is one of China’s most mind-blowing architectural wonders. It’s located in Hunyuan County, Datong, in Shanxi Province, and was built over 1,500 years ago during the Northern Wei Dynasty. What makes it really special is that it’s dedicated to three religions at once—Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism—a rare sight in the world.

Located 50 metres above the ground on the cliffs of Cuiping Peak, the temple seems almost impossible to stand on. Surprisingly, it does! The secret lies in 27 cantilever beams drilled deep into the cliff, keeping it steady, while its location protects it from rain, rocks, and floods.

Here, in the southern part, you’ll find Chunyang Palace, Sanguan Hall, and Leiyin Hall. These places are filled with beautiful Taoist and Buddhist sculptures. The northern part has Wufo Hall, Guanyin Hall, and Sanjiao Hall, where the statues of the founders of Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism are placed together. Connecting these two parts is the 10-meter-long Changxian Bridge.

How To Visit This Temple

To visit, reach Datong city first—it’s well connected by high-speed train and flights from Beijing, Xi’an, Taiyuan, and other cities. From Datong, the temple is about 1.5 hours by car, and private vehicles or tours are the easiest way to reach it.

The best times to visit are March to June and September to November, when the weather is pleasant, and the crowds are smaller. Since only 80 visitors are allowed inside at a time, arriving in the morning helps you beat the queues. Whether you’re an architecture lover, a history fan, or just want an unforgettable view, the Hanging Temple is a must-see.

Don’t forget to add this amazing temple to your China to-do list!
