Plastic waste is a major cause of concern leading to the deterioration of the environment. Plastic has clogged oceans, ravaged landfills and even somehow entered our bloodstream. In a landmark move, a Pune-based company has now put plastic chips packets to good use. It has recycled these chips packets into interesting sunglasses that will not just protect your eyes from harmful UV rays but also protect the environment. Here’s more.
The World’s First Sunglasses Made Of Chips Packets Is Here
The brainchild of Anish Malpani, Ashaya is a company from Pune that found an amazing way to recycle and repurpose chips packets into gorgeous sunglasses. After two years of laborious research, the team at Ashaya found a ground-breaking way to transform the multi-layer plastic (MLP) and create UV-polarised, comfy sunglasses which can last a long time.
This has been the hardest thing I have ever been a part of.

Anish Malpani took to Twitter to show the world how the startup recycles chips packets to make sunglasses. In his caption, he revealed that this has been one of the hardest things he has ever been part of. But hard work certainly pays off! Today, the founder introduces — the world’s first recycled sunglasses made of chips packets made here in India. A video shared by the founder shows that chips packets are impossible to recycle and just end up clogging landfills and making the lives of waste pickers, harder.
For more context:
This multi-layered plastic waste is considered impossible to recycle with close to 0% being recycled globally. 80% of ALL ocean leakage is flexible plastic packaging. It’s honestly the worst. pic.twitter.com/Vw3iEW6BYi

Revenue Earned Used To Empower Waste Pickers
With the new recycled sunglasses, people can truly be part of a big change. These sunglasses are durable, sustainable and comfortable. Most importantly, the revenue earned from these sunglasses will be used to pay waste pickers better and get their children to school. Isn’t this amazing? All sunglasses come with a QR code. Once scanned it shows you where the waste comes from and which waste pickers worked on it. Ashaya has also launched coasters made of chips packets, so this is the change you’d want to be part of!
So, what do you think about these cool new sunglasses? Are you ready to invest in an eco-friendly future that empowers waste pickers?
