Come 2025, IATA Plans To Introduce SAF Registry To Accelerate Intake Of Sustainable Fuels

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is a global trade organization representing approximately 330 airlines comprising over 80% of global air traffic. Now, the Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) Registry will be established by the IATA. This is done to authoritatively track and report emissions reductions from SAF, hence expediting the adoption of SAF.

The development of the Registry is already receiving support from six national authorities, one airline group, seventeen airlines, three OEMs, and one fuel producer. It is said that the Registry will debut in 2025’s first quarter.  SAF to account for up to 65% of the total carbon mitigation required to reach net zero carbon emissions in aviation by 2050. By doing so, the Registry aims to stimulate investment in SAF production and encourage airlines to increase their use of these fuels.

Here is its importance:

  • No matter where SAF is manufactured, airlines will be able to purchase it thanks to the Registry. The verified environmental characteristics of each batch can be monitored and linked to the airline making the purchase.
  • IATA is the one who started the initiative to standardise data for quick processing, and it is collaborating with fuel producers and certifying bodies.
  • The Registry will assist airlines in adhering to laws including the EU Emissions Control Scheme and the Carbon Offsetting Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA).
  • To prevent adding needless financial obstacles to the SAF ramp-up, registration participation will be based on a cost-recovery model.

SAF is essential to decarbonising aviation. As part of the global drive to ramp up SAF production, the SAF Registry will assist in meeting the essential demands of all stakeholders. For governments to monitor the types and amounts of SAF utilized, a reliable method is required. Corporate clients need to be able to openly account for the Scope 3 emissions they produce. Additionally, airlines need to be certain that they can assert the environmental advantages of the SAFs they bought. The Registry plans to help in all of these.

Aviation is a crucial component of the global transportation network. As the world grapples with the urgent need to combat climate change, the aviation industry faces increasing pressure to reduce its environmental impact. It has emerged as a vital solution to this challenge. The IATA SAF Registry represents a significant step forward in the aviation industry’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and promote sustainability.
