In December 2024, Australia replaced its Global Talent Visa (Subclass 858) with the National Innovation Visa. This is a permanent residency visa that allows foreigners wishing to live in Australia a chance at citizenship if they meet the necessary qualifying standards. What are these standards? Scroll on to find out.
All About Australia’s National Innovation Visa
Australia’s National Innovation Visa is the country’s reworked permanent residency visa programme that aims to attract individuals with globally recognised achievements. According to the Financial Express, foreign nationals with outstanding academic or professional achievements have to first submit an ‘Expression of Interest’ to apply for this visa. If selected, they can then proceed to apply for the Australian National Innovation Visa.
This visa is granted to individuals who have an internationally recognised record of exceptional achievement in an eligible area. They can be gifted in areas like advanced technology, artificial intelligence, renewable energy, biotechnology, and medical innovation.
Interested applicants have to prove their ability to contribute meaningfully to Australia’s economy, community, and international standing. Once approved, individuals can stay, work and study in Australia. They can also enrol in Australia’s public health care scheme, sponsor relatives to come to the country, travel to and from Australia for 5 years, and once eligible, apply for Australian citizenship.
Eligibility & How To Apply
To apply for Australia’s National Innovation Visa, an individual must have an internationally recognised record of exceptional achievement in a profession, sport, arts, academia and research. It is to be noted that not everyone can apply for this visa. One must have a nominator with a national reputation, and it must be one of the following –
- Australian citizen
- Australian permanent resident
- Eligible New Zealand citizen
- Australian organisation
Once this is done, you can submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) on Australia’s Immigration website, with documents to support the claims. Once you receive an invitation, you can then apply for a National Innovation Visa.
This visa is a great opportunity for individuals who wish to move to Australia permanently.
