India has reported 257 active COVID-19 cases, all classified as mild, amidst a regional spike in infections linked to the JN.1 variant. The surge, particularly in Singapore and Hong Kong, has prompted the Indian Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to review the situation. While the rising trend in Asia has caused international concern, Indian authorities maintain that the domestic COVID-19 scenario remains stable and under control.

According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), India’s total number of active COVID-19 cases stands at 257. The government has clarified that all reported infections are mild, with no hospitalisations or deaths. Kerala has the highest number, with 69 active cases, followed by 44 in Maharashtra and 34 in Tamil Nadu.

The ministry conducted a high-level review to assess the global situation and its possible impact on India. Rise Of The JN.1 Variant In Asia

The recent rise in COVID-19 cases in Singapore and Hong Kong is largely attributed to the JN.1 subvariant, a lineage of Omicron. According to The Economic Times, the JN.1 variant has been identified in over 200 cases in India. Although it spreads more easily, the severity of infections remains similar to earlier Omicron strains.
