CT Review: I Visited Blah! In BKC & Had An Absolute Blah-st Relishing Their Dim Sums, Sushi & More!

Tucked away in the heart of the vibrant and bustling Bandra-Kurla Complex is Blah!, an iconic pink haven filled with flamingoes and modern boho decor. If Barbie owned a restaurant, it would not look too dissimilar to Blah! in my opinion. I went there to try their new lunch menu with my colleague Nikitha Sebastian. What followed was a feast for the eyes as well as our palates!

A Rose-Coloured Haven Of Flamingoes, Florals And Fantastic Food

One thing that this place is guaranteed to give you is plenty of photo ops. The place is dotted with flamingoes that are your perfect picture partners if the person you came with is too camera shy. Combined with the trinket-adorned wall, floral ceiling pieces and pastel pink motifs, the interiors of Blah! are a pleasant cross between Howl’s room (from Studio Ghibli’s Howl’s Moving Castle) and Barbie’s dreamhouse.

And such Barbiecore aesthetics are not the only thing that pleases your inner child. They also have swing seats! And don’t you worry about your #Sunkissed selfies, the floor-to-ceiling windows ensure that there’s plenty of natural light. You almost feel you’re sitting in a garden.

Our Culinary Journey At Blah! In BKC

The food at Blah! transcends traditional cuisines and offers everything, from Pan-Asian and Mexican to modern Indian delicacies. Overall, the food was very flavourful but I was disappointed with the portion sizes given to us. It was also a tad on the pricey side but I guess the quality of ingredients they use justifies that.

Nilesh, our server, was as prompt in his service as he was polite. We started out with the drinks. Our mocktails of choice were Passion Melon Fizz and Kokum Burst. The Passion Melon Fizz was a refreshing and fruity delight. It was slightly on the sweeter side which complemented the fizz nicely. Kokum Burst, on the other hand, was a tart and tangy delight. If you’ve grown up sipping on kokum sharbat, this beverage will be fraught with nostalgia.

Now, for the main part — the food!

What We Ordered

Cheese Burst Mushrooms

Firecracker Prawns

Crispy Lotus in Jungle Sauce

Prawn Laksa Soup

Chicken Avocado Caesar Salad

Tempura Prawn Sushi

Sriracha Chicken Dim Sum

Chicken Pasta In Pink Sauce

Prawn Thai Green Curry With Jasmine Rice

As I mentioned before, I found the portion sizes quite disappointing. We started with the Cheese Burst Mushrooms. It had a strong earthy flavour which paired nicely with the melty cheese inside. Personally, I’m not a fan of mushrooms so I didn’t vibe with this one.

The Firecracker Prawns were next there was truly an explosion of flavours in my mouth with this one. It strangely reminded me of Schezwan sauce marinated prawns but they were very delicious so I didn’t mind that. The capsicums and onions brought a nice crunch to the dish.

The Crispy Lotus Stem In Jungle Sauce won my heart. It was a flavourful, crunchy snack bathed in spicy and sweet sauce and I could easily devour plates of this while gossiping with friends. It’s a perfect, and dare I say healthier, alternative to fries.

Moving on to the next course, we tried the Prawns Laksa Soup. Laksa traditionally has thick rice noodles but this one had vermicelli which are thinner. The soup itself was very delicious. It was rich and creamy and was served at the perfect temperature. The aroma and coconutty flavour made it a perfect treat for a cold rainy day. Personally, I think the soup would be better off without the vermicelli but it was still fun to eat. A squeeze of lemon would have made it even better and a bigger bowl of it would have been divine.

The Chicken Avocado Salad was pretty standard. Nothing to complain about but nothing to write home about either. The leaves were fresh and crunch and the chicken was adequate. My opinion may be influenced by the fact that I don’t consider myself a salad person. If you are one, you may like it better than I did.

Next, we relished the Tempura Prawn Sushi Roll. I was excited about this the most but quite disappointed, again, in the portion size. If you are a sushi person, you won’t find anything to complain about with this dish. The prawns were soft yet crunchy, the rice was well-seasoned and the sauces complemented the sushi instead of overwhelming it.

The saga of my excitement about the dish and the subsequent disappointment with the quantity continued with the Chicken Sriracha Dim Sum as well. They were quite flavourful and came with a few dipping sauces which is good as on their own, they were a bit dry. Funnily enough, the sauces outnumbered the pieces of dim sum we were served.

Now, for the main course! Keeping in theme with the restaurant’s pink colours, we decided to order a Chicken Pasta In Pink Sauce. It was cheesy, creamy and gooey – everything you want your pasta to be. If you’re a picky eater and want to play it safe, you can try this dish.

Last but definitely not least was the Thai Green Prawn Curry With Jasmine Rice. This was my first time trying jasmine rice and I can’t say that I was a fan. The curry on the other hand was a beautiful blend of flavours. Tangy, creamy, and very reminiscent of the Lay’s Cream and Onion flavour.

It’s The Dessert Round!

Usually, by this point, my stomach is bursting and I have to force myself to order a dessert for the sake of a fair review. But this wasn’t the case this time, thankfully. We ordered a Hazelnut Cheesecake and Blah! Tres Leches.

If you loved Nutella growing up, the Hazelnut Cheesecake will not disappoint you. It was sinfully good without being too heavy. This was Nikitha’s favourite of the two.

Blah! Tres Leches was my favourite of the two. It wasn’t very sweet and I loved that about it. It was also very light and airy and if your meal was heavy, this dessert doesn’t feel like it adds to the heaviness.
