Himachal Pradesh Floods: 259 People Dead, 460 Houses Damaged, Property Loss Hits ₹1,202 Crore

Monsoon rain brings relief from the scorching heat, but not always for hilly regions. Heavy rainfall in these areas can cause floods and landslides, putting people’s lives at risk and damaging infrastructure. Now, Himachal Pradesh is dealing with floods that blocked roads and caused deaths. Read to know more! 

Himachal Pradesh Flood Death Toll Rises

As per data from the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC), the death toll in Himachal Pradesh floods has reached 259 in the 64 days since June 30. As per Times Now, during this period, ₹1,200 crore worth of public and private property has been damaged. Moreover, of the 259 deaths, 106 people died due to rain- and disaster-related incidents.

Of the rain-related deaths, 18 people died in landslides, while 13 lost their lives due to drowning. Lahaul and Spiti recorded 15 deaths from monsoon-related disasters. The remaining 153 deaths were reported in road accidents during the same period.

Roads Blocked In The State

The heavy rainfall has caused a disturbance in road travel. Times Now reported that more than 150 roads are currently blocked in the state, with Mandi reporting the highest number of closures at 78, followed by Shimla with 30. The rainfall has affected power supply too. 374 distribution transformer regions (DTRs) are currently out of service. Mandi has the highest number of affected DTRs at 128, while Shimla has 84 and Kullu has 81.

As for the property losses, the Public Works Department (PWD) has suffered the biggest loss of more than ₹914 crore, while the Jal Shakti Vibhag has reported damage of over ₹258 crore. Moreover, 460 houses have been damaged, and 460 animals have died. The state’s water supply has also been hit, with 40 water supply schemes currently disrupted. Hamirpur has reported 23 affected schemes, while Shimla has 17.
