The Japanese city of Kyoto is known for beautiful gardens, Buddhist temples, and it has just added another gem to its map—a unique dining spot that promises an unforgettable experience. Have you ever thought that an abandoned railway line can be a perfect spot for a restaurant? Surprising, right? In Kyoto’s Umekoji district, a new restaurant has opened, known as Future Train, which is built inside three old train carriages. Read to know more.
Japan Train Restaurant On Abandoned Railway Line
The new restaurant in Japan, Future Train, was launched by Japanese artist Sebastian Masuda. All thanks to his great idea, Japan got its first restaurant, built on an abandoned railway line. At first glance, the restaurant feels like a fun space and has a lot of pink colours. Guests enter this restaurant via a ticket gate that works as the restaurant’s entrance and then move to a platform before starting their “Journey to the Future.” There are three total cars here, each having a different theme and vibe. For now, only Car No. 2 and Car No. 3 are open.
Car No. 2 is the main dining area with a retro-futuristic look and bright plum-red colour decor. Car No. 3 is the bar counter with box seating and high tables for casual meals and drinks. As per NDTV, Car No. 1 is planned to start from September 20, 2025. With its launch, the restaurant will be more than just a place to eat. It will have an experiential art space with light, sound, and video installations.

What’s On The Menu?
The food at the Future Train is a mix of traditional Japanese dishes and some with modern twists. According to NDTV, some of their best dishes include: Ume Mirai Gourmet Burger, Future Ekiben Box with meats, fish, and sandwiches, Kyoto-style pasta and omurice (a Japanese rice omelette), Birdie Buddy’s Fluffy Pancakes, and the giant Kawaii Five-Story Pagoda Parfait. For drinks, they have colourful shakes, cocktails, and mocktails made using local flavours such as yuzu and matcha.
