Mumbai’s Iconic Air India Building To Get New Identity; Ashoka Stambha To Replace Airline Logo

One of Mumbai’s most iconic landmarks, the Air India Building at Nariman Point, will soon lose the airline logo and get the Ashoka Stambha. The Maharashtra government acquired the building last month and plans to use the space to host state cabinet meetings and for Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ office. Here’s what we know.

Air India Building In Mumbai To Get A New Identity 

The Maharashtra government officially acquired the iconic sea-facing Air India Building for ₹1,601 crore in June 2026. The 23-storey building will no longer carry the airline logo. Instead, it will either display the state government logo or the Ashoka Stambha. According to Hindustan Times, the state government has major plans to renovate the building.

The 22nd floor of the former Air India Building will be refurbished with a conference hall. The space will then be used to host cabinet meetings. This grand conference hall remained locked even when several floors of the building were given on rent. But that will change soon. Currently, cabinet meetings are held either on the seventh floor of Mantralaya, at Sahyadri Guest House or on the second floor of Vidhan Bhavan.

Building Was Constructed In 1974 

According to Hindustan Times, the authorities are also planning meeting rooms and cabins for the Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, on the 23rd floor. The building was constructed in 1974 as the headquarters of Air India. The white marble structure was the first thing visible while entering Nariman Point from Marine Drive, making it one of Mumbai’s most recognisable landmarks.

Reportedly, the building was also one of the targets of the 1993 serial blasts. In 2013, Air India shifted its corporate headquarters to New Delhi. The building then came under the control of AI Assets Holding Limited. It has now been acquired by the Maharashtra government. A tender worth ₹180 crore will soon be floated to refurbish the building with new flooring, false ceilings, windows, escalators and lifts.
