India and Germany are giving student exchanges a lift by waiving visa fees for short-term school and college visits via the Indo-German Visa pact. The announcement came on Wednesday after External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar sat down with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul for wide-ranging talks in New Delhi.
Indo-German Gratis Visa
According to Hindustan Times, the Ministry of External Affairs said the new Indo-German Visa pact is meant to make it easier for young people to move between the two countries, whether for academic projects or cultural immersion. It’s a small but telling gesture, part of a broader effort to deepen ties that stretch across defence, trade, technology, green growth, and education.
That breadth was on display in the talks. Both ministers reviewed what has been achieved so far under the India–Germany Strategic Partnership and agreed there was momentum worth building on. They also decided to create a new consultation platform on the Indo-Pacific, an area where both countries see overlapping interests in stability, security, and open trade routes.
All You Need To Know

Johann Wadephul’s itinerary wasn’t confined to South Block. He met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, spoke with Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, and brought along a business delegation to underline the economic dimension of the partnership. Germany is already one of India’s top European investors, but both governments are pushing for even more cooperation in industries of the future.
That focus was clear when the German delegation kicked off its visit in Bengaluru. They toured ISRO, dropped by the Indian Institute of Science, and met with German companies already embedded in India’s innovation landscape. The conversations revolved around artificial intelligence, digital transformation, space collaboration, and sustainable cities, fields where both sides see scope to grow together, as stated by Hindustan Times.
The timing of Johann Wadephul’s visit carries symbolic weight. This year marks 25 years of the India–Germany Strategic Partnership, built on shared democratic values and a commitment to global stability. What began as a political and economic alignment has gradually widened to include climate action, science, culture, and now, a very practical step: making it easier for students to cross borders.

With gratis visas in place, exchanges between Indian and German schools and colleges are set to become smoother. Beyond bureaucracy, the measure points to a larger ambition. This ambition is to ensure the next generation of Indians and Germans build connections that last well beyond the classroom.
