Gujarat Allows Shops, Malls, Restaurants To Operate 24 Hours
Gujarat has now made a major decision and passed a bill allowing shops, malls, restaurants, cafes and more to operate 24 hours. According to India Today, the Gujarat Assembly passed the Gujarat Ease of Doing Business Bill, 2026, introducing amendments to the Gujarat Shops and Establishments Act.
Under the new rules, police and local authorities will not be able to close commercial establishments solely because of restrictions on operating hours. However, shops, cafes, restaurants, malls and more will still have to follow all the guidelines related to cleanliness, traffic management and safety.

What This Means For Shops And Businesses?
Under the existing system, commercial shops faced restrictions on their operating hours, with some exceptions for areas such as hospitals, national highways, railway stations, municipal corporation zones, petrol pumps and more.
According to India Today, in municipal and state highway zones, shops were required to remain closed between 2 am and 6 am. In other areas, the closure timings were 11 pm to 6 am. The new amendment removes these restrictions, which means that shops and commercial establishments can now operate 24/7 on any day of the week.
However, this does not mean that employees will work without any breaks. Existing legal provisions related to work hours, rest time, intervals, employment conditions and worker safety will continue to apply. These new rules mean that shops can earn more money by staying open for longer. Night shifts can also help create more jobs, and people in Gujarat may have a better nightlife now.
