Several infrastructure projects are in progress across Indian cities. These projects aim to improve road and rail connectivity, cut travel time, develop cities, and more. Now, another infrastructure upgrade is planned in Chennai. The city is planning the Teynampet-Saidapet elevated corridor, a 3.2-km four-lane flyover. Scroll down for the project details!

Chennai’s Upcoming Flyover Will Be Above Metro Stations

The four-lane flyover in Chennai was facing challenges because it was passing above metro tunnels. But the good news is that this project is now all set to resume. As per The New Indian Express, this project is the 3.2-km Teynampet-Saidapet four-lane elevated corridor to be built above Teynampet and Nandanam Metro stations. Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has give approval to the State Highways Department.

Around 2.3 km of the elevated corridor has already been completed, but construction on Anna Salai has been paused. This is because officials noticed a change in the original design. So, for cross-checking, CMRL then appointed a Japanese consultant to review the design and suggest changes. The consultant worked along with the State Highways Department and found no fault.

Different Construction Work Above Metro Stations

According to the consultant, portal frames will be installed along a 300-metre stretch at 15-metre intervals. According to The New Indian Express, regular steel pillars will support the elevated road in most areas. However, where the road passes above Teynampet and Nandanam Metro stations, special portal frames will be used instead. Their legs will rest on the Metro station walls.

The corridor is expected to be complete by March next year, as installing the portal frames alone will take around three to four months. Also, because workers are allowed to work for only six hours a day. We’re excited to see India’s first elevated corridor built directly above an operational Metro tunnel.
