One of the busiest roads between Hyderabad and Vijayawada is heading toward a major upgrade as the widening of National Highway 65 moves into the implementation phase. The project is set to be done with an estimated budget of ₹10,391 crore. Read on to know more about this project.
The Expansion Of Hyderabad-Vijaywada Highway
The 231 km corridor is one of the most used interstate routes in the region. According to One India, as approved by the Union Cabinet in 2025, this highway will be expanded from four lanes to six lanes afterwards. This project is said to cut nearly two hours from the current travel time.

Currently, the average time to travel on this road is about 4.5 to 5 hours. After the completion of the project, the journey time will be reduced to 2.5 to 3 hours. NH-65 is an important key road connecting Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, linking Hyderabad and Vijayawada. The highway passes through major cities like Nalgonda, Suryapet, Kodad, and Nandigama, witnessing heavy traffic with around 60,000 to 80,000 commuters travelling on a daily basis.

The project will widen the entire stretch to six lanes with service roads in most areas to reduce traffic. Not only this, but bypasses will be built in towns with over 50,000 people to ease congestion. The project cost is ₹10,391 crore, which will cover land, utilities, tree relocation and service lanes. Funded by the Centre, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will carry out the work. As per the news portal, the detailed project report is completed, tenders are under process, and construction is to take about two years in two or three phases.
As per One India, Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, Telangana Roads and Buildings Minister, has been in constant touch with Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari for the smooth implementation of the project. The state minister has already stated his aim behind the project is to bring the Hyderabad-Vijayawada road travel time down from 5 hours to 2.5 hours, making road travel the fastest option between the two cities.
