“I believe beauty pageants can be a force for good in the world. People often criticise pageants for judging women by their looks, but that’s just one piece of the puzzle,” says Sonal Kukreja who was crowned Miss Supranational India 2024. Representing India at the Miss Supranational 2024 pageant to be held in Poland on 17 July, she is determined to make a difference. “What’s even more amazing is that these causes championed by past winners keep making a difference long after their reign! This is why I’m so passionate about using pageantry as a platform for positive change.”

With roots in Jaipur, her name is on the way to becoming synonymous with grace, intelligence, and beauty. We caught up with Sonal Kukreja about the qualities the title demands, how beauty pageants can contribute to social change, popular eating trends and more:

Sonal Kukreja: Since I was crowned LIVA Miss Diva Supranational 2023, I’ve been incredibly honoured to represent India at Miss Supranational 2024. This journey started with a deep desire to make a significant impact, to do something significant. Winning Miss Diva felt like the perfect opportunity to step up and truly embrace that dream. I’ve always believed in pushing boundaries and trying everything I can. Life is short, and I want to give it my all, experience as much as possible, and make a positive difference. That’s the fire that fueled my participation in Miss Diva, and it’s the same fire that’s pushing me to give my absolute best at Miss Supranational.

2. How important is physical fitness in your preparation?

Sonal Kukreja: Physical fitness is an essential part of my preparation for Miss Supranational. While looking toned on stage is a bonus, it’s a much smaller piece of the puzzle compared to overall health and stamina.
I work out, attend community events, make media appearances, practice ramp walks, and hone my public speaking skills—the list goes on. To keep up with this demanding schedule, I need to be internally fit. That means having the energy and endurance to power through long days and unexpected challenges. Sure, looking good on stage is great, but feeling confident and strong from the inside out is what truly allows me to
shine.

3. How do you navigate many diet trends and choose the best for you?

SK: For me, it’s all about building healthy habits for the long term rather than jumping on the latest fad. I try to focus on eating home-cooked meals as much as possible. There’s something so satisfying and healthy about knowing exactly what goes into your food. And eggs? They’re a lifesaver! Who says they have to be boring? With so many ways to prepare them, they’re a fantastic source of protein that keeps me feeling full. Finding healthy substitutes is another smart tip. Honey for sugar and dried fruits for snacking all add to a healthier you. The point is interestingly eating your food makes sense and works on your body.

4. What are your thoughts on popular eating trends?

SK: I love seeing so much focus on diet and nutrition these days. Plant-based diets are a fantastic option for those who want to make a more sustainable and compassionate food choice. They can be incredibly healthy and full of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains – all amazing for glowing skin and natural energy.  I believe in finding a balanced approach that works for your body and lifestyle. Remember, what works for one person might not work for another. The most important thing is to find healthy eating habits that make you feel your best, both inside and out! After all, true beauty comes from radiating confidence and feeling healthy from within.

5. What is your philosophy on cheat meals or days off from your fitness routine?

SK: As a model and someone who is training to represent India, taking care of myself is a full-time job, and that includes both physical fitness and mental well-being. Sure, I train hard and eat clean most of the time. But let’s be real: sometimes I just crave to eat something that is out of my diet. Denying myself completely would only lead to cravings and potential slip-ups later. Instead, I factor in occasional cheat meal portions are key. Think of it as a reward for all the dedication, and it keeps my metabolism humming. The same goes for workouts. Rest and recovery are crucial for building muscle and preventing injuries. I schedule rest days where I might do some gentle yoga or a relaxing walk instead of hitting the gym hard. It allows my body to recharge and come back stronger for the next training session. It’s all about striking a healthy balance –pushing myself but also allowing myself some indulgences. It’s all about feeling good in my skin, and that shines through on stage!

7. Do you have any favourite cheat meals?

SK: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is crucial, but that doesn’t mean we can’t indulge in our favourite treats sometimes. After all, balance is key. Personally, my weakness is anything Punjabi! Parathas with a dollop of makhan (butter) are pure comfort food for me. And when I’m back in Jaipur, my hometown, the pyaaz ki kachori and a chilled glass of malai lassi are simply irresistible. To balance these indulgences, I make sure to prioritise healthy eating most of the time. It’s all about finding that sweet spot between healthy habits and celebrating through food. After all, a happy heart is a beautiful heart – and sometimes, that happy heart craves a delicious paratha!

8. How do you integrate mental wellness into your overall approach to health and fitness?

SK: Being on the pageant circuit can be incredibly demanding. Long schedules, constant travel, and the pressure to perform can take a toll. That’s why prioritising mental wellness is just as important as physical fitness in my journey to becoming Miss Supranational. One of the things I discovered, especially after moving to Bombay, was the power of Pockets of Joy. These tiny moments spark happiness throughout the day, like a stranger’s smile, a kind compliment, or even a delicious cup of coffee. It’s amazing how something so simple can completely shift your perspective. But of course, there’s more to it than just appreciating the little things. Meditation has become a game-changer for me. It allows me to stay centred and grounded even amid a hectic schedule. Taking those few minutes daily to quiet my mind and connect with myself makes a difference in my overall well-being. It allows me to approach every challenge with a clear head and a positive attitude, which is vital for success in any aspect of life.

9.  Can you share a memorable experience where your fitness or eating habits made a significant impact on your well-being?

SK: Absolutely! One truly transformative experience I had was right after winning the LIVA Miss Diva Supranational 2023 title. Stepping onto the international stage for Miss Supranational meant taking my prep to a whole new level. I have this incredible team – I call them my “army of angels” – who guide me through everything from training to nutrition. After winning Miss Diva Supranational, everyone assumed pageant prep would be all about shrinking down. But imagine my surprise when my amazing nutritionist told me I needed to gain some muscle! It was a total shift in mindset. Pageantry often gets associated with a very specific kind of beauty, but this experience showed me true well-being goes beyond just the number on the scale. Focusing on gaining healthy weight, with the right balance of protein and complex carbs, was empowering. I felt my energy levels soar, my confidence grew even stronger, and on stage, I radiated this newfound inner strength. It was a beautiful reminder that beauty comes in all forms, and when you prioritise health and well-being, it truly shows.
