Currey Road As Lalbaug, Charni Road As Girgaon, 8 Mumbai Railway Stations To Drop British Names; List

The Maharashtra government is all set to change the names of eight railway stations in Mumbai. The claim is that these eight station names are linked to the time of colonisation by the Britishers. Hence, the names of these stations will be changed. If reports are to go by, the name change will be implemented once the centre gives its nod to the proposal. Here is the full list of the stations and their new names.

Full List Of The Railway Stations In Mumbai Getting The Name Change

According to an article which was recently published by livemint, the proposal to change the apparent British-era names was given by Rahul Shewale, who is a Shiv Sena MP. The Maharashtra government has given its nod to the proposal and it will now be forwarded to the Centre.

Following are the railway stations that will be renamed: –

• Charni Road: This may be renamed to Girgaon.
• Cotton Green: This may be renamed to Kalachowki.
• Curry Road: This may be renamed to Lalbaug.
• Dockyard Road: This may be renamed to Mazgaon.
• King’s Circle: This may be renamed to Tirthankara Parshvanath.
• Marine Lines: This may be renamed to Mumba Devi
• Mumbai Central: This may be renamed to Jagannath Shankar Sheth, after the prominent philanthropist.
• Sandhurst Road: This may be renamed to Dongri.

Other Important Details To Know About This Name Change

However, as per Bharat Gothoskar, a heritage evangelist cited in the livemint article, not all stations being renamed are rooted in colonial rule. For instance, ‘Charni’ simply means grazing lands in Marathi.

Marine Lines, too, is named after the barracks located near Dhobi Talao. He also went on to highlight that railway stations like Reay Road and Grant Road, which are named after British Governors, are not on the list.
