Recently, a Dalit family in Madhya Pradesh faced discrimination at the hands of villagers when they refused food and seating to the family at the temple feast. The incident has left the family in shock. A complaint has also been registered with the police and the situation is being investigated. This incident has left many people wondering about the treatment that Dalits and people of lower castes receive even today.
Dalit Family In Sagar, MP, Denied Food & Seating
This particular incident took place in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. The incident happened at the Ram Janaki Temple in the Semra Village in the district of Sagar. The temple was hosting a communal feast which it organised by collecting donations as well as grains from the entire village.
It is worth noting that even the members of the Dalit community made contributions for this purpose. However, once they arrived at the temple feast or bhandara to get prasad, they were denied. They alleged that two people from the upper-caste community refused to hand them the prasad.
The two people were identified as Ram Bhajan Yadav and Babloo Kushwaha who are the residents of the same village. According to the complainants, the two people, instead of respectfully handing them prasad, flung it towards Dalit women and children. The incident happened on the 4th of July.
Complaint Registered With Amadara Police Station
The two even warned the members of the Dalit community to not sit with others in the temple. Following this humiliating treatment, some members of the Dalit community raised objections. However, they were met with a slew of caste-based slurs and derogatory comments by the two.
This further escalated the already tense situation. According to an article recently published by India Today, the complainants said that they were told that since they belonged to the lower caste, they were not entitled to be fed.
On the 7th of July, a complaint was filed with the Amadara Police Station against the two people under IPC sections 294 and 506, which are obscene acts and criminal intimidation. The two suspects, however, are still at large.
