The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning about a deep depression forming over the Bay of Bengal. This system, which intensified from a depression, is expected to cross the Odisha coast near Puri by midday today.
Deep Depression Over Bay Of Bengal To Hit Puri
According to the IMD’s latest bulletin, the depression moved slowly north-northwest at 10 kmph over the past six hours, intensifying into a deep depression. As of 11:15 am, the system centred about 50 km south-southeast of Puri, 140 km east-southeast of Gopalpur, 90 km south-southwest of Paradip, 140 km south-southwest of Chandbali, 260 km east-northeast of Kalingapatnam, and 260 km south-southwest of Digha.
The IMD expects the system to continue moving northwest and cross the Odisha coast near Puri within the next three hours. It is likely to maintain its deep depression intensity until evening before weakening to a depression by midnight. The system will then move west-northwest across Chhattisgarh in the next 24 hours.
In response to the severe weather conditions, the IMD has issued a ‘Red Alert’ for Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. These states are expected to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, with isolated areas potentially receiving extremely heavy rainfall of over 20 cm.

Orange Alert Issued
Additionally, an ‘Orange Alert’ has been issued for Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and West Bengal. These regions should prepare for heavy to very heavy rainfall ranging from 7 to 20 cm. The IMD has also advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea until September 11 due to the adverse weather conditions.
The impact of the depression has already led to flash floods in Malkangiri and Koraput districts. Malkangiri has seen significant inundation, with rainwater flowing over four feet in some areas on National Highway-326. Potteru town has faced severe impacts, with heavy rains over the past three days causing widespread waterlogging. Flooded roads in Malkangiri have cut off transportation between Malkangiri and Koraput, leaving vehicles carrying essential supplies stranded.
Evacuations from low-lying areas are ongoing. Over the past 24 hours, rainfall in Odisha has varied: Nabarangpur recorded 6 cm, Gopalpur and Cuttack 7 cm each, Koraput 4 cm, and Jajpur and Bhubaneswar 3 cm each.
