To ease passenger and flight congestion at Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi, and prepare it for future growth, the airport is undergoing an extensive renovation. Among its signature projects is the renovation of terminal T1 at Delhi Airport.
Changes in IGI Airport by the end of 2023!
Phase 3A of the Delhi Airport expansion project still requires the construction of integrated T1. Opening in 2023 will be a brand-new arrival facility with four more luggage carousels covering 8,000 square metres. In addition to ample parking, modern restrooms, and more space between baggage belts, the new arrival facility also features a ceremonial VIP lounge, a cutting-edge meet-and-greet gallery, and a modern food court.
What Will Change In The Upgraded T1?
- The new Terminal 1 will merge Terminals 1D and 1C.
- A single integrated Terminal 1 will house departures and arrivals.
- A total of 13 entry gates will replace the current 8 entry gates.
- There will be nine baggage carousels in addition to the baggage facility.
- A total of 169,000 square meters addition to Terminal 1 from the existing 60,000 square meters.
- There will be an expansion of the size and number of arrival baggage belts. Originally there were eight belts of 52 metres each, but now there will be ten belts of 70 metres each on the new T1.
- There is a plan to construct a Smart Apron where 82 aircraft parking stands will replace the current 55.
- A new retail and dining area will be in the new T1.
What’s More In The New Delhi Airport T1 Terminal?
A fourth runway is also being constructed at the Delhi Airport, which would be an important milestone for the nation. Delhi Airport T1 Terminal is also installing elevated eastern cross taxiways to speed up aircraft taxing.
The present T1 was unable to handle 20 million passengers in FY2017, so there was a requirement for a larger terminal. So, the combined arrivals and departure terminals (T1-C and T1-D) have a capacity of 40 million passengers.
According to DIAL CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, work on the completely integrated T1 is anticipated to be finished by the end of 2023 or at the start of next year. The majority of low-cost airlines’ domestic flights will be managed by the new T1. The renovated Terminal 1 would host all domestic Indigo flights, the DIAL CEO had announced.
