Delhi Airport To Close This Runway For 90 Days From June: Here’s What Travellers Need To Know

Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport will shut Runway 28/10 for 90 days, starting from 15 June 2025. This temporary closure is to facilitate the upgrade of the runway’s Instrument Landing System (ILS) to CAT III B. The move will allow aircraft to land safely during low-visibility conditions, especially during the winter fog, which often causes disruptions at the airport. While this improvement aims to enhance efficiency and safety, it is expected to temporarily impact flight schedules and passenger flow.

Runway 28/10 is currently equipped with CAT I ILS, which limits aircraft landing during poor visibility. With the upgrade to CAT III B, the runway will support landings even when visibility drops to as low as 75 metres. According to the Delhi International Airport Ltd. (DIAL), the upgrade will ensure smoother and safer operations during the fog-prone winter months. Delhi Airport is one of the busiest in South Asia, and winter fog has historically disrupted hundreds of flights each season. The CAT III B system is one of the most advanced in the world and is commonly used in airports dealing with heavy fog and low visibility.

Temporary Closure May Lead To Disruptions

As reported by The Times of India, the closure will likely lead to increased pressure on the airport’s other runways. Travellers can expect longer wait times, potential delays, and changes in flight schedules. Airlines may also revise their operational plans to adjust for the limited runway capacity. Passengers should regularly check with their airlines and adjust their travel plans as needed. Authorities have chosen this 90-day window strategically to complete the upgrade before the peak winter fog season brings visibility challenges.

What Travellers Should Keep In Mind

Passengers flying in or out of Delhi during this period should prepare for minor disruptions. It is advisable to check flight updates frequently, arrive at the airport early, and allow extra time for check-in and boarding. Staying informed through airline apps and the official Delhi Airport website can help reduce last-minute hassles. While the temporary closure may cause short-term inconvenience, the long-term benefits of enhanced safety and reduced winter delays will make the upgrade worthwhile for travellers and airlines alike
