The Blue Line is one of the busiest corridors of the Delhi Metro. It connects Dwarka Sector 21 in Delhi with Vaishali and Noida City Centre in Uttar Pradesh. The service on this line was disrupted for almost six hours on Thursday morning after a brazen cable theft on this route. According to Hindustan Times, the trains operated at restricted speed on the affected section during the day, and services were also delayed.

DMRC took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce the delay in operations and explained the entire matter. In the post, they explained that the authorities initially planned to “carry out the repair work in the night after the end of passenger services.” However, seeing how it would impact passengers, especially during evening peak hours, they decided to start the restoration work during the afternoon non-peak hours.

The post further elaborated that it took “a specialized team of 20 personnel” to carry out the repair work. Reportedly, “140 metres of cable had been damaged and these personnel executed the restoration work in a record time of just over 30 minutes.” Soon after, normal services resumed on the Delhi Metro Blue Line.

According to DMRC’s post, it would usually take the team 3-4 hours to complete such a massive task. However, keeping in mind the convenience of the passengers, the team was able to restore it in about 30 minutes–one of the fastest restoration works executed by Delhi Metro.

Just as the name suggests, cable theft means stealing metro cables with the purpose of selling them. According to The Times of India, thieves usually try to cut and steal the wires after services cease after the end of the day. The darkness helps them carry out the heist without the fear of getting caught. These wires carry no electrical current and are highly prized for their valuable copper content. Thieves usually carry out these thefts in areas that are usually not covered by CCTVs.
