Delhi Metro: New 3-Coach Train To Ease Travel On Lajpat Nagar–Saket G Block Stretch Via 8 Key Stations

India’s very first three-coach train corridor will soon be a reality as the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is gearing up to inaugurate the unique metro line between Lajpat Nagar and Saket G Block. As part of the Golden Line under Phase IV expansion, the corridor aims to revolutionise short-distance urban travel in the capital.

Spanning 8 kilometres over eight stations, the Lajpat Nagar–Saket G Block stretch will serve some of South Delhi’s busiest residential and commercial hubs. Stations along the route include Lajpat Nagar, Andrews Ganj, GK-1, Chirag Dilli, Pushpa Bhawan, Saket Court, Pushp Vihar, and Saket G Block.

The most unique part of this project is the use of a three-coach train structure, specifically tailored for shorter city routes. The train will be equipped to accommodate 300 passengers each in every coach, making it possible for up to 900 individuals to go per trip. According to DMRC, this smaller setup ensures more frequent service, quicker turnarounds, and a comfortable commute without the issue of overcapacity.

As reported by News Brief, this new corridor will significantly improve connectivity in South Delhi. Lajpat Nagar will be a triple interchange station between the Pink and Violet Lines. Chirag Dilli will have an interchange with the Magenta Line, and Saket G Block will provide an interchange with the Airport Line, improving last-mile connectivity to key destinations.

The project aligns with DMRC’s bigger picture of making metro travel more convenient and flexible for local commuters. The strategic planning of interchanges will reduce travel time and offer smooth metro connectivity between zones.

In addition to enhancing city travel, the three-coach metro line also offers environmental and fiscal advantages. The compact train design uses less energy per trip, making the project a sustainable and cost-effective choice for metro operations. Route-specific and short trains will reduce operational and environmental expenses while retaining efficiency in service.

As part of Phase IV expansion, DMRC is building three large corridors that stretch 65 kilometres: RK Ashram to Janakpuri West, Maujpur to Majlis Park, and Tughlakabad to Aerocity. The extension of the Pink Line (Majlis Park–Maujpur) is scheduled for opening in 2025, whereas the extensions of the Golden Line and Magenta Line, including this new three-coach configuration, are targeted for completion by 2026.
