Holi, a day of colours, thandai, revelry turned quite menacing for the traffic police in Delhi. Not surprisingly enough, traffic rules were violated and drunk driving cases surged dramatically on the said day. On March 15, a day after Holi, an official revealed to news agencies that drunk driving challans surged by 47% and traffic violations by 100% during the festival of colours in the capital.
100% Surge In Challans For Traffic Violations On Holi In Delhi
A report by The New Indian Express revealed that traffic violation cases increased by 100% on March 14, Holi. A total of 7,230 challans were issued on the day of the festival in 2025. This is a sharp increase from 3,589 violations recorded the previous year. The statement threw light on other traffic offences that took place on Holi this year like tinted glass window violations, triple-riding and driving sans seat belts. For triple-riding 573 challans were issued by the Delhi Traffic Police and for tinted glass violations, 97.
Dinesh Kumar Gupta, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) revealed to TNIE about the measures put in place on Holi. He revealed that the Delhi Traffic Police had special measures implemented to curb incidents of underage driving, two-wheeler stunts, triple-riding and drunk driving. In fact, 84 special teams with alcometers were deployed at drinking hotspots, major intersections and vulnerable locations across Delhi to curb drunken driving. Delhi Police Posted A Cheeky “Lockup Party Brochure”
On March 14 itself, Delhi Police took to its official X handle with a cheeky post warning of consequences to traffic rule violators. Calling it an “exclusive after-party alert’, designed to resemble a Holi party brochure, the warning left Netizens amused. Hooligans were promised “premium pickup service”, free entry to jails, “natural red colours” and an exit with special certificates.
Moreover, the ‘Holi Party’ for hooligans also featured “PCR Pulse Techno”, “DJ Law & Order Trance” and the guest of honour, “Police Lineup Party Squead.” To secure a seat for hooligans, all one needs to do is dial 112. Looks like this party (warning) brochure still couldn’t prevent miscreants, but the challans might.
Delhiites, did you celebrate Holi without breaking traffic rules? We sure hope you did!
