Durga Puja is one of the most happening, colourful and joyous festivals of India, and the victory of Maa Durga over the demon Mahishasura. And Kolkata is the first Indian city that comes to mind when we talk about it. But did you know there are several other places that celebrate this festival with grand pandals, delicious food and beautiful idols? This Durga Puja, explore five Indian cities beyond Kolkata for a festive experience.

1. Delhi

After Kolkata, Delhi is another great Indian city to witness grand Durga Puja celebrations. CR Park, a neighbourhood in South Delhi, comes alive with grand pandals, beautiful idols and lots of Bengali food during the celebration. The decorations totally give “mini Kolkata” vibes, and you won’t get tired of clicking so many pictures and being a part of the celebrations for Maa Durga.

2. Guwahati 

Guwahati is another Indian city that is great for experiencing the festive spirit of Durga Puja. Each year, communities set up grand pandals with creative themes showcasing art and culture. The famous Kamakhya Temple also holds grand festivities during the festival and attracts thousands of devotees.

3. Cuttack

People have been celebrating this festival in Cuttack for over 500 years. After Kolkata and Delhi, Cuttack is one of the best Indian cities for this colourful festival. Cuttack is known as the “Silver City”, and instead of using cardboard and clothes, the pandals’ backgrounds are decorated with silver ornaments and work called “Chandi Medha”. The entire city comes alive with lights. People come out of their houses to pray and enjoy delicacies like Dahibara Aloodum and a special fried food item called Thunkapuri.

4. Mumbai 

Mumbai is another wonderful place to celebrate Durga Puja. There are several pandals set up in Andheri and Juhu, and many Bollywood celebrities visit these pandals, with some of them even hosting celebrations. Mumbai is also home to Bengali communities that organise cultural programmes, Dhunuchi Dance, Sindur Khela and stalls serving street food like Khichuri Bhog, Kathi Rolls and Mishti Doi.

5. Bengaluru

Bengaluru is also a great place to be in for Durga Puja celebrations. The city brings the spirit of West Bengal by setting up pandals and tents. Many Bengali communities in the city bring traditional artists and drummers (dhakis) straight from Bengal for the festival. People from all backgrounds and cultures join the celebrations, dance (Dhunuchi Naach) and share free community meals called bhog. The streets of the city also get lined up with stalls selling Bengali meals, rolls, sweets, and so much more.
