In a recent development, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) has been facing considerable criticism over its steep fare hike introduced in February. Commuters in Bengaluru are comparing it with the newly revised and modest fare rise of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. Some are also requesting BMRCL to revise its fares once again.
Delhi Metro Vs Bengaluru Metro
Just compare these reasonable hikes in the Delhi Metro to what @OfficialBMRCL has made in Bengaluru.
The steep hike in Bengaluru is absolutely illogical and makes Bengaluru metro the costliest in the country and unaffordable to many.
It’s even more shameful that they haven’t… https://t.co/cuQN5LAyGA

As per a report by The New Indian Express, on Monday, Delhi Metro revised its fares, citing operational costs, with a marginal increase of ₹1-₹4 and up to ₹5 on the Airport Express Line. However, this modest revision made commuters in Bengaluru demand a revision of Namma Metro fares and requested that the Fare Fixation Committee (FFC) report be made public.
Commuters have drawn comparisons between the steeper hikes by the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) and the relatively less steep fare increase by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). They also questioned the logic, especially since Delhi Metro has an expansive network of 395 km compared to Bengaluru’s 96 km.
As per a report by Hindustan Times, in February, BMRCL raised fares by up to 50% on some routes. While the minimum fare of ₹10 for 0-2 km remained unchanged, the maximum fare jumped straight to ₹90 from ₹60. Tejasvi Surya, Member of the Lok Sabha, also called the hike “absolutely illogical.” He took to his X account and even wrote, “The steep hike in Bengaluru is absolutely illogical and makes Bengaluru metro the costliest in the country and unaffordable to many.”
Commuters Call Namma Metro The “Costliest In the Country”
50₹ for 32 km metro ride in a congested Delhi is a steal deal. But @OfficialBMRCL charges 90₹!
Why so steep? Years of tendering delays, land acquisition mess & lethargic officials doubled construction costs which is now unfairly passed on to commuters. #NammaMetro@ChristinMP_ https://t.co/DpBG6aktxq— ದಿಪು 🍉 (@dipunair) August 25, 2025
X user, @dipunair, also called out BMRCL on his account and wrote, “Why so steep? Years of tendering delays, land acquisition mess & lethargic officials doubled construction costs, which is now unfairly passed on to commuters.”
John, a teacher from Jayanagar and a regular commuter in Namma Metro, shared with TNIE that even though Namma Metro has overcrowding issues and a lack of first and last-mile connectivity, it has still ended up being the costliest metro service in the country. He requested the fares to be revised and not burn the “public’s pocket”. Another commuter, Prajwal, who is a store manager at a mall, shared similar views and also questioned the lack of transparency. He said the FFC report has still not been made public by BMRCL.
The response of commuters is justified as the Delhi Metro continues to offer lower fares across routes compared to Bengaluru. According to a report by HT, a 20 km ride in Delhi might cost ₹30. For the same distance on the Namma Metro, it can cost up to ₹50, highlighting the disparity in prices.
