India’s first hydrogen train, an eco-friendly train service, was launched by Indian Railways in July 2026 between Jind and Sonipat in Haryana. But to make better use of the train, the authorities are actively planning to extend the train service to Delhi. Here’s what we know about this development so far.
India’s First Hydrogen Train May Soon Run To Delhi
Currently, India’s first hydrogen train operates on the 89-kilometre route between Jind and Sonipat in Haryana. The train has a seating capacity of about 2,600 passengers. But according to India TV News, only 40 to 60 passengers travel on it daily. This means that the passenger turnout is quite low. To boost the number of passengers, Indian Railways is now planning to extend its service to Azadpur Station near the wholesale fruit and vegetable market in Delhi.
Because of the low number of passengers, the hydrogen train makes only one trip a day, even though two trips a day were planned during its launch in July 2026. Reportedly, a team of experts is monitoring the train’s operations and its trial runs to Delhi. However, Indian Railways has not made a final decision regarding the extension.

Train Can Travel Up To 300 Km On A Single Full Tank
According to India TV News, for the last two months, the hydrogen train has been running successfully, even though passenger traffic was low. The authorities are examining all aspects related to technology and passenger safety before they reach a decision regarding the extension.
You would like to know that the hydrogen train can travel approximately 250 to 300 kilometres on a single full tank. The distance from Jind to Delhi is about 130 kilometres, so the train can easily cover it on a full tank. But yes, running the train to Delhi comes with many other challenges. This 10-coach train has a capacity of 2,600 passengers. Meanwhile, trains departing from Delhi often require 18-20 coaches to handle large numbers of passengers.
