With an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 366 as of November 24, Delhi is classified as having extremely poor air quality. However, the AQI is still in the “severe” range in many parts of the city, with hazardous air quality found in places like Anand Vihar (412), Narela (410), and Wazirpur (409).
Delhi’s Air Quality Is Impacting Daily Life
The increase in pollution in the capital has turned into a persistent crisis rather than a short-term problem. According to Business Today reports, the Central Pollution Control Board reported a high AQI of 412 on November 23. Wazirpur had the highest air pollution index (AQI) at 440 by 7 p.m., with 17 stations in the city still reporting severe air quality. These figures point to a severe environmental issue that presents urgent health hazards.
Such severe air pollution has serious negative effects on health. High levels of dangerous airborne particles, like PM2.5 and PM10, can lead to serious respiratory issues. These risks are particularly in susceptible populations like children, the elderly, and those with underlying heart or lung diseases. Business Today reported that the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has also sought data from doctors to track the number of children affected by the polluted air.
Government Measures And Public Precautions
To combat the rising pollution levels, authorities have ramped up enforcement efforts. According to Business Standard reports, in October, over 1.64 lakh challans were issued, amounting to ₹164 crore, for violations related to pollution control. Additionally, the Transport Department has mandated that vehicle owners affix colour-coded stickers to identify fuel types, aiming to reduce vehicular emissions.
Given the severe air quality, it is essential for residents to take protective measures:
- Stay indoors as much as possible, especially for children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory issues.
- Purchasing indoor air purifiers can help lower exposure to dangerous pollutants.
- When going outside, protect yourself from fine particulate matter by wearing N95 masks or other high-filtration masks.
- People who have heart or respiratory issues should limit their physical activity and pay close attention to their doctor’s advice.
The severe pollution in Delhi is a pressing issue that requires both government action and individual responsibility.
